If current plans are anything to go by, you won’t be needing your passport to get through DXB much longer.

State broadcaster WAM confirmed the launch of the Emirates Smart Wallet scheme, which claims to streamline travel movement across the airport using travelers smartphones.

It’s the first part of a broader, larger-scale plan that will eventually aim at minimizing the travel clearing process, and passport control congestion on either side of arrivals or departures.

The airport is in the midst of a major overhaul, following Emirates’ promise to implement significant technological and procedural change across DXB over the next few years.

The “Together” initiative is targeting tangible, feasible real-world solutions that will improve security, safety, service, savings and speed, all using smart technology adoption. It’s being jointly run alongside Dubai Customs, Dubai General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), Dubai Police and Dubai Airports, and will focus on making the Emirates hub at DXB the most advanced terminal in the world.

DXB has also recently launched a suite of private sleeping pods, known as the sleep’n’fly lounge. The idea is to give passengers with long waits, delays or transfers a place to rest up and recharge before their flight.

In the short-term, traveler personal data, Emirates ID and passport information as well as e-gate card data will all be packed onto users’ smartphones through the entire security clearance process. Nice and easy.
